I came across a news couple of days ago that the film distributors in the city met with the theatre owners and discussed on the possibility of reduction in ticket prices.. dont know how many multiplex's will agree to this.. but still.. this should start the proceedings against the piracy..
take an example of a family consisting of parents and two kids.. if they are panning for a movie... the average ticket cost is Rs.120/person.. so thats close to 500 rupees.. then comes the interval snacks n coffee... even if they end up purchasing only few, average cost would be around 150.. add a restaurant / auto expenses after the movie.. its one thousand rupees... for a single movie... and the best part is u dont like the movie!! this is the case with most of the middle class family... and according to them a one time investment on a dvd player worth a thousand rupees is not a big deal... they are absolutely fine to spend just 50 rupees to buy a dvd and watch the latest movie at home... with home made snacks... and food... so piracy has become an integral part just because of the cost of the theatres..
on the other hand... this logic does not apply to multiplex operators like sathyam/inox/pvr... where even if the ticket rates are fixed at 200/person.. u will still find house full sign when u try to book it onine... adding to that.. a coffee will start at 50 rupees.. and u will still find the counter busy all the time... so places like these are for people who really do not know what to do with the money they have / who are always attracted towards big names...
the issue of survival is only for the local theatres.. a non a/c theatre in my area used to screen many new movies and the ticket price will be 40 rupees.. over a period of time.. by seeing the rise of multiplexes, it was converted into an airconditioned theatre with full of speakers which they claimed are for dts effect.. suddenly the price of tickets became 100 rupees for new releases for the first two weeks... now a rational human being will think in two ways.. one..whether to spend so much for a local theatre which does not have any hi fi settings like multiplexes.. is waste and decide to spend 20 rupees more and goes to the multiplex... and the other.. settle down for pirated cd which is much cheaper...
so this is an issue which is affecting the small and local theatres and they need to realise on where they are and where they ought to be!! just not blame piracy and those who buy them at the market!!!
